PY - 2010/4/1. Y1 - 2010/4/1. N2 - Objective: The APOE epsilon-4 allele has consistently emerged as a susceptibility factor for Alzheimer's disease (AD). Pro-inflammatory cytokines are detectable at abnormal levels in AD, and are thought to play a pathophysiological role.

We found that the frequency of the apoE epsilon 4 allele was 0.45 in 93 Alzheimer's disease patients, 0.46 in 23 vascular dementia patients, 0.31 in 13 dementia of the The APOE epsilon 4 allele is associated with cognitive decline and the development of dementia in the general population as well as in patients with TBI. These findings raise the question of whether patients with TBI who are APOE epsilon 4 allele carriers are more vulnerable to the negative effects of sleep apnea on their cognitive functioning. Abstract. Apoliprotein E, type {epsilon}4 allele (ApoE-{epsilon}4) is associated with late-onset sporadic Alzheimer`s disease (AD). We have found that the cumulative probability of remaining unaffected over time decreases for each dose of ApoE-{epsilon}4 in sporadic, late-onset French AD. Many clinical and basic studies have confirmed an association between the apolipoprotein E (apoE) epsilon 4 allele and the development of Alzheimer's disease (AD). Corder et al. [1] reported that survival from onset was unrelated to epsilon 4 gene dose.

Neurodegeneration : a journal for neurodegenerative disorders, … Several case-control studies have reported an association between schizophrenia and the epsilon 4 allele of Apolipoprotein E gene. The results have been equivocal. This meta-analysis has evaluated the collective evidence for an association between the e4 allele of Apolipoprotein E gene and schizophrenia. Apolipoprotein epsilon-4 allele and the two-year progression of cognitive function in Chinese subjects with late-onset Alzheimer's disease Recent observations provide evidence that the epsilon 4 allele of the apolipoprotein E gene (APOE), located in this region, is a risk factor for late-onset AD. Within this region, other genes possibly involved in the pathophysiology of AD and in strong linkage disequilibrium with the APOE locus may be responsible for this association.

There are at least three slightly different versions (alleles) of the APOE gene. The major alleles are called e2, e3, and e4. The most common allele is e3, which is

Apolipoprotein E, type epsilon 4 allele (APOE OBJECTIVES: The apolipoprotein epsilon 4 allele (APOE/epsilon 4) increases plasma cholesterol level and the risk for the late onset type of Alzheimer's disease. However, the correlation between hypertension and APOE/epsilon 4 has not yet been clarified. The apolipoprotein E (APOE) epsilon 4 allele is known to influence risk of AD but it has been difficult to establish whether it affects episodic memory differently from other cognitive functions. OBJECTIVE: To examine the association of epsilon 4 with decline in different cognitive systems. DESIGN: Longitudinal cohort study.

The apolipoprotein E type 4 allele (APOE-epsilon 4) is genetically associated with the common late onset familial and sporadic forms of Alzheimer's disease (AD). The APOE epsilon 4 allele is associated with cognitive decline and the development of dementia in the general population as well as in patients with TBI. These findings raise the question of whether patients with TBI who are APOE epsilon 4 allele carriers are more vulnerable to the negative effects of sleep apnea on their cognitive functioning. As we did observe a possible additive interaction between the APOE ε4 allele and low physical activity for AD risk, APOE ε4 carriers may particularly benefit from an active lifestyle. Although we did not find a gene–environment interaction for general dementia risk, a protective effect of physical activity on the risk for dementia was found in both APOE ε 4 allele carriers and non-carriers. Results: The presence of at least one epsilon 4 allele was associated with faster cognitive decline in the incident population-based AD group (p = 0.01). Parallel results were produced for the two prevalent dementia samples only when adjusting for disease severity or excluding the most impaired participants from the analyses.

Inheritance of a specific apo epsilon allele (apo epsilon 4) determines in part the risk and the mean age at onset of Alzheimer's disease.
